They say that the early bird catches the worm… I think I finally cracked what it means. On a recent trip to Norway I was lucky enough to spend two nights in the Sognefjord region. I awoke early on my last morning, prior to taking the train to Oslo, and thought to myself – stay in bed a little longer, or get up and see what might greet me. I should add that it was around 5:30 am at the time and I’m not the world’s most cheerful early riser! However some unseen force propelled me out of bed and on to the path along side the Aurlandsfjord. The cool morning air nipped at my cheeks, but it was as fresh and pure as the crystal clear fjord which mirrored the majestic peaks and cliffs from all sides. The clouds seemed to conceal the fjord as if cloaking some deep long-hidden secret, but would soon retreat to reveal the glassy surface of the water. At moments like this, it feels so darned great to be alive! I encountered only one other person on my hour long walk around the edge of the fjord and back. We exchanged smiles as if to denote our sheer joy at the spectacle. Words were just not enough. I returned to my small abode ready to pack up my suitcase (and yes, do the obligatory sitting on it to get it to close!) I would depart fjordland at midday, but the memories of that morning will stay with me forever…
